1972, former ceramics engineer, Ken Moyer, set out on a course to
attain his dream of becoming a vintner. Accompanied by his wife,
Mary, and young-daughter, Ken searched the country to find an ideal
place that would not only be conducive to the production of
fine-wine, but also, to the blossoming of his young family. When the
couple arrived in the Ohio Valley, they knew they had found their
place. Ken and Mary promptly bought the land and the building in
which you are now seated.
Ken himself, the grounds which would become Moyer's Winery have an
interesting history, to say the least. Constructed in 1926, the
building began as a restaurant and dance-hall, and, ironically
enough, served as a speakeasy during the Prohibition-era. In the
mid-1930's, the property continued to attract interesting patrons by
hosting amateur boxing bouts in the barn located west of the
restaurant. The devastating flood of '37 put a damper on the diverse
festivities the locals enjoyed as six-feet of water stood stagnant in
all facilities on the property. After renovations in the 40's, right
around the time Ken was serving the Allies as a Captain in the U.S.
Army, during which he received the Bronze-Star, the doors once again
opened as "The Top Hat" gambling club. By the time Ken and
Mary stumbled upon their ideal Ohio Valley home, the building had
served as a truck-stop for nearly two decades.
Ken and Mary transformed the grounds into a vineyard, they officially
opened for business in 1973 with a modest, traditional pairing menu
of cheeses, breads, and soups. But with the novelty of having a
winery in the unexpected place of Adams County, Ohio, the
restaurant's popularity, bolstered by its quality wine, grew, and
with it, the eclectic choices of today's menu.
dining, one can enjoy a glass of wine while observing the very
DeChaunac or Chambourcin vines from which it was fermented. The
complete wine-making process is performed in-house just a few feet
below the dining-room in our winery; from de-stemming the grapes,
crushing the fruit with modern Italian equipment, to fermentation in
stainless-steel tanks, we ensure that your wine is of a quality that
only the conditions of the Valley can provide.
Ken and Mary's legacy, we continue to make the original blends of red
and white wines which the couple perfected nearly 50 years ago. The
reds Cabernet and Chambourcin, the whites Vidal and Chardonnay, as
well as the sweet River Valley white and red wines are as they were
all those years ago. But just as our culinary selections have grown
over the years, so have our wines. Our newest additions of Country
Home Red, Concord, Raspberry, Strawberry, Peach, and Sangria are sure
to carry-on the tradition of quality wine.
1999, Ken and Mary sold the winery and restaurant to a group of
close-friends on the basis that they would uphold the high-standards
of quality that the Moyer's held themselves to. We feel confident in
saying that we have achieved that goal, and, in a few moments, we
believe you will agree.
